Ceramic Artists coming to offer Community Workshops in Tracy

Tracy, CA – The City of Tracy Cultural Arts Division announces the launch of the
Artist-In-Residence Program as part of the going exhibition, Dualis: Ceramic Invitational,
curated by Ilena Finocchi. at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts, 715 Central Avenue in
historic downtown Tracy, California. Dualis is on display from April 4th through June 14th,
2008 in the North, Souza, and Matthews Galleries. The Residency runs from May 17th
through May 24th, 2008.
Through cross-collaboration between the Center’s Arts Education and Exhibitions Program,
artists from the exhibition will travel to Tracy to offer a special ceramics workshops available
to the public. Artists, Arts Educators, and the community are encouraged to participate a
special series of events during the week.
Dualis is a thematic group exhibition of emerging ceramic artists that spans the genres of
functional, sculptural, and spatial art. Over 20 artists from across the United States, and 1
from Thailand were selected for versatility and creativity in using clay as the main material in their work. The exhibition’s title, Dualis, is the Latin root word meaning two. Each artist is allowed to explore the theme both in style and genre. This exhibition is curated by Ilena Finocchi and features work by: Ben Alhvers, Jen Allen, Josefina Calzada, Tiffany Carbonneau, Tim Clark, Gisele Couturier, Amy Halko, Brian Harper, Jen Holt, Liz Howe, Miranda Howe, Maria Kretschmann, Stephanie Leach, Krisaya Luenganantakul, Lorna Meaden, Dulcie Miller, Jill Oberman, Lori Phillips, Hope Rovelto, Kristin Schimik, Tara Wilson, and Shalene Valenzuela.

Artists & Arts Educators Workshop
Tuesday, May 20th/Wednesday, May 21st, 6 - 9 pm, Saturday, May 24th, 3 - 5 pm

This exciting and hands-on workshop is for artists and arts educators working in clay.
Whether it be opposites, similarities, or a symbiosis of two parts that work as one, what
makes all those possibilities interesting questions is that they are not alone. In this 3-day
workshop, Ilena Finocchi and Lori Phillips will present strategies and clay techniques to
enable participants to explore this theme. Memories and recollections will be drawn upon to
develop personal narrativestriggering these expressive ideas and then translating them
through the use of clay and mixed media will be emphasized. Casting, handbuilding,
wheelthrowing, and finishes will be discussed and demonstrated.Bisque firing is scheduled
during the week and participants will have projects and learn techniques to take back to
their studios and classrooms.
Limited to 25 participants - $25 Registration at the Box Office - Drop-ins are Welcome
Materials List: sketchbook/journal, pencil, found objects to create mixed-media sculptural
work, small (palm size) objects to cast in plaster, images of recollections/memories to work
and draw from, exacto knife, variety of brushes for slip application, clay tools

Our guest artists will be working in the Ceramics Studio.
Feel free to drop in, observe artists at work, and ask questions.

Kids & Family Workshop
Saturday, May 24th, 2 - 3 pm

A fun event for the whole family, based on the idea of Dualis. The community is invited to
create clay animals that “whistle” to a different tune.This free workshop will show a different
use for clay, the musical instrument.

Ilena Finocchi is an artist and independent curator from North Lima, Ohio. Across her career
she has worked in graphic design, illustration, and as a ceramic sculptor. Ms. Finocchi
received a B.F.A. from Youngstown State Unversity (Youngstown, OH) and a M.F.A. from the
School for American Crafts, Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester, NY). She has
exhibited professionally since 2003 and Dualis is her first professionally curated international
exhibition.

Lori Phillips is an artist and arts educator from Cumming, Georgia. Ms. Phillips holds a B.F.A.
from the University of Georgia (Athens Georgia), M.A.Ed. from Georgia State University
(Athens Georgia), and M.F.A. from the School for American Crafts – RIT (Rochester, New
York). She is currenty the Chair of the Art Department and Assistant Professor of Ceramics
and Sculpture at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. Ms. Phillips has taught art since
1985 and has exhibited professionally since 2002.
