"Beehive - the 60's Musical" to be Season Opener at Grand Theatre Center for the Arts
Tracy, Calif. - City of Tracy Cultural Arts Division announces that the 2007-2008 season at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts will open with Beehive - The 60's Musical on Thursday and Friday, October 4 and 5, 2007. The show will be performed on the Grand Theatre's ETK Theatre stage, which was named for founding benefactor Eleni Tsakopoulos-Kounalakis. The Grand Theatre is located at 715 Central Avenue in downtown Tracy, Calif.
Beehive is a fast-paced, light-hearted and nostalgic look back at the female vocalists and groups of the 1960s - The Supremes, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Connie Francis, Tina Turner - and features favorite songs of the era like Downtown, It's My Party, Me and Bobby McGee, My Boyfriend's Back, Proud Mary, Respect and Where the Boys Are.
The show was originally produced in New York City nightclub in 1985, created and directed by Larry Gallagher. It was an instant hit and moved to a large off-broadway theatre. After 600 performances there, it toured many major United States cities and was successful in Japan as well.
"Beehive opened in Boston, Mass. earlier this summer and then moved on to Mesa, Arizona where it received 13 standing ovations after its first 15 performances," says City of Tracy Arts Program Manager Theresa Yvonne. "We are delighted to be able to kick off our Grand Theatre season with such a fun, upbeat and popular show."
The News Press wrote, "Playing a supporting role are 43 wigs designed by Jason Hayes. They give the show its name, of course, offering a hair-raising tribute to '60's style."
Tickets to Beehive - The 60's Musical are $65, $60, $55, $45, $40.
Tickets to all shows are available online at www.atthegrand.org, by phone at 209-831-6TKT (6858) and at the Grand Theatre Box Office, 715 Central Avenue, Tracy, Calif., from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., Monday-Saturday and for one hour prior to each performance.
